The Silurian of
Gotland II
This page is dedicated to fossil rich matrix from the Silurian of Gotland. This Swedish island preserves
an almost complete record of the Silurian. Ostracods are the dominant microfossil but the deposits
also preserve a rare Silurian scolecodont fauna along with the more typical marine groups
(brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids etc.) and some more exotic groups (holothurians and chintinozoa).

All of the specimens listed were collected between 1970 and 1984 by the ostracod researcher Robert
Lundin, whose published works include descriptions of the Devonian and Silurian ostracods of
Oklahoma. Each sample has full geological data including the exact locality information. The map
below shows some of the most important localities on Gotland (there are hundreds).

All samples have been washed and processed to produce the best concentrate possible. This is a rare
chance to get material from a classic Silurian series. Please be aware quantities are limited and we
have no way of getting more of this material.

Gotland Microfossil matrix
collection - £125/$200
Lau Backar #1 - Eke Beds (Type locality)
A very good quality sample that is rich in ostracods. The fauna is diverse and many of the
forms are ornate. In addition there are fossils that are a complete mystery to us, plus the
more familiar bryzoan buds, microbrachiopods, tentaculitids, trilobite pieces,
Cornulites and
Spirorbis worm tubes etc. This is an unusual fauna, with a notable concentration of what
appear to be sponge spicules or sclerites.
Some of the rarest and most unusual fossils
known from these samples are gonioids from Ophiocistioids and ossicles from holothurians.

This is a true micro fauna so photographing the material is difficult but the photographs
below show some of the fauna we were able to pick out. A very interesting sample.
Eke Beds ostracods, spicules, tentaculitid, spirorbid and
cornulitid worm tubes, and Ophiocistioid gonioids
Eke Beds Ostracods
Eke Beds Ostracods and
bryozoan polyps
Lau Backar #2 (fine) - Eke Beds

Another very good quality sample but almost devoid of large
ostracods. However, there are abundant bryozoans and
spicules from sponges and other creatures (the small net-like
structures in the first image are holothurian ossicles and the
serrated structure is a ophiocistioid goniod. The second
image shows just some of the spicules that occur). Trilobite
parts and some smaller ostracod species also occur.
Lau Backar #2 (coarse) - Eke Beds

Another very good quality sample from the same bed as the
fine sample listed above. This coarse fraction of matrix
contains considerably larger fossils. The image shows that
there are the typical bryozoan, crinoid, brachiopods etc.
Few, if any ostracods, but this is a nice, clean sample useful
for classroom study or those with an interest in smaller
macro fossils.
Dapps - Upper Mulde Beds
This is an excellent ostracod sample, bearing an abundant and diverse fauna. The species are notably different to the Eke
beds, being Wenlock instead of Ludlow in age. The images show typical specimens in the samples. As with many of the
Gotland ostracods, there is no single reference that can be used to identify them to the species level and undoubtedly many
are undescribed but many can be identified to genera (The Treatise on Invertebrate Palaeontology is a good place to start).
Lickershamn 1 (fine) - Upper Visby Beds

An excellent ostracod sample, bearing an abundant fauna. The fauna is different
to the other beds of Gotland, with this sample containing many of the small, but
spinose species. There are also many examples of the plain forms and these are
represented by a number of genera. Spicules and many other types of distinct
microfossils are also present. Another great example of how diverse the micro
world can be.
Lickershamn 1 (coarse) - Upper Visby Beds
Another very good quality sample from the same bed
as the fine sample listed above. This coarse fraction
of matrix contains considerably larger fossils. The
image shows that there are the typical bryozoan,
crinoid, brachiopods etc. A few ostracods, but this is
a nice sample useful for classroom study or those
with an interest in smaller macro fossils.
Lickeshamn Visby Ostracods
Langars (coarse) - Slite Marl unit g
A good quality sample that is richer than the images
suggest. Some large species of ostracod occur along
with the more typical marine invertebrate fauna
(bryozoans, crinoid remains, brachiopods etc.)
Langars - Slite Marl - £5/$8

A very good quality sample that is rich in
ostracods. The far right image shows some
of the species found and the generally very
clean condition of the fossils. Again
contains a fauna that is different to the
previously listed samples.
Hoburgen II (fine) - Burgsvick-Hamra Boundary
This sample is from the latest Silurian and near the top of the exposures on Gotland. It is a nice, clean sample containing a
typical marine fauna. Sponge spicules and holothurian ossicles have been found. Rarely a scolecodont and conodont appear.
The sample is not rich in ostracods, but the species that occur are different to elsewhere. The images below show typical
samples and some of the fossils that have been recovered.
Hoburgen II (coarse) - Burgsvick-Hamra Boundary

The coarse fraction of the material listed above. We have very little from this
locality. The coarse fraction is notably rich in bryozoans, especially Fenestellate
forms. There are also many more crinoid remains that normal, of which many
appear to be from
Gisocrinus. The odd microbrachiopod has been recovered, and
as with every sample there is always something we have no idea what it might be.
Irevik II (coarse) - Lower Visby Beds

A good sample featuring microbrachiopods,
some ostracods and some very unusual
torpedo-like bryozoans(?). The latter are
something we are not familiar with so any clues
to the identification would be appreciated.
Irevik II (fine) - Lower Visby Beds

A very good sample with microbrachiopods,
plentiful ostracods and some of the unusual
torpedo-like bryozoans?.  An interesting fauna.
Gane (fine) - Slite Marl

A very good quality sample that has a varied
ostracod fauna, which includes both smooth
and ornate forms. The far right image shows
some of the species found and they are in a
generally quite clean condition.
Gane (coarse) - Slite Marl

A good quality sample containing bryozoan
and other larger faunal elements. Trilobite
pieces occur. A decent general sample.
Hoburgen IIA (fine)
Burgsvick - Hamra Boundary
A very good quality sample that has an
abundant ostracod content. The fauna
present has more smooth forms than the
older beds and represents one of the
youngest parts of the Gotland succession
Irevik 1 (coarse) - Upper Visby Beds

A good quality coarse fraction from one of the best
Visby Bed localities. Bryoans, brachiopods and the
usual faunal elements are present. Some large forms
of ostracods occur as do an unusual 'torpedo'
bryozoan (at least that is what we think they are).
Irevik 1 (fine) - Upper Visby Beds

A very good quality fine fraction from one of
the best Visby Bed localities. Bryoans, and
the usual faunal elements are present but
the ostracods are more considerably more
prolific than in the coarse fraction.
Kneipbyn (very fine) - Hogklint unit C
Chitinozoa sample
A very good quality sample that has a varied
fauna including common ostracods, bryozoans
and shell material. Chitinozoa specimens are
common.
Snoder #2 (fine) - Hemse Marl NW
A rich sample that has abundant ostracods.
Smooth and ornate forms occur and
preservation is very good. The fossils are
mostly complete.
Irevik II (coarse) - Hogklint unit a
A good quality coarse fraction from near the top of
the exposure at this locality.
Irevik II (fine) - Hogklint unit a
A very good quality fraction from near the top of the
exposure at this locality.
Nyhamn Well (coarse)
Lower Visby Beds
A very good quality sample
displaying notable differences in
the genera and species of
ostracod and brachiopod present.
Gandarve (coarse) - Halla Beds

An unusual sample in that it is relatively rich
in microbrachiopods. Many are juveniles
and typically represent the Orthids and the
common smooth forms. Preservation is
very good.
Gandarve (fine) - Halla Beds

Another sample in that it is relatively rich in
microbrachiopods. The Orthids and the
common smooth forms are most abundant.
Preservation is very good. There are some
tiny brachiopods in this sample!
Kvarnberget (coarse) - Slite Marl
unit g
A very good quality sample that is
unusually rich in trilobite fragments.
Typically they are free cheeks, and
pieces of segments, but cranidia and
pygidia do occur.
Kvarnberget - Slite Marl unit g - £5/$8

A very good quality sample containing
an abundant ostracod fauna. Bryozoans
are the other dominant faunal element.
Very nice.
Hide (coarse) - Slite Marl unit g

A very good quality and unusual sample. There are
a few free fossils but most are held in clusters with
the matrix. There are brachiopods, crinoids,
ostracods etc. The fauna is abundant, very well
preserved and clean. This is a nice sample
Hide (fine) - Slite Marl unit g
A very good quality sample. There are only a few ostracods but other microfossils abound. The most notable are the small
buds/polyps from bryozoans or corals, sponge spicules and the occasional holothurian filter (see centre of 3rd image).
Klintehamn - Slite Beds
A very good quality sample that is unusually rich in trilobite fragments. Complete free cheeks are not uncommon and a few
species are clearly represented. Wonderful preservation, even if fragmentary. This material is from Hede's locality #30.
Gothemshammer I (coarse) - Halla Beds
A well preserved sample. A typical marine fauna including
baundant bryozoans and brachiopods. Tentaculitids are
more common in this sample
Gothemshammer I (fine) - Halla Beds
A well preserved sample containing abundant abundant
ostracods. The fauna is notably different to other
samples in that is contains
Bollia and Neobeyrichia.
Slite I (coarse) - Slite Marl unit g
(Site also known as Slitebrottet 1)
An excellent quality sample. Although not the richest,
preservation is generally excellent with the fossils
being very clean, particularly the ostracods.
Snoder West (fine) - Hemse Marl
A rich sample that has abundant ostracods.
Smooth and ornate forms occur and
preservation is very good. The fossils are
mostly complete.

ostracods of a wide variety of
forms.
For additional Gotland collections for those not wanting every
sample please see our
Silurian and Devonian microfossils page.
Kneipbyn (fine) - Hogklint unit C

A very good quality sample that has a varied
fauna including common ostracods, bryozoans
and shell material. Microbrachiopods also
occur. Some Chitinozoa and scolecodont
specimens usually occur.
Initially we were selling the samples listed below individually but we feel that it is better to sell
these items in a large collection. Not only does this give the collector more or less the complete
geological section of Gotland but it gives them the entire fauna. Each collection contains one of
each sample listed below (minor variations may occur) and also selected samples from those listed
above and from our chitinozoa page to produce a total of 50 samples. Quantities are limited.
Gothemshammer II - Halla Beds - £5/$8
An excellently preserved sample with a diverse and clean
ostracod fauna. One of the best.
Lower Visby Formation
Rovar Liljas - Lower Visby Beds - Chitinozoa sample
An excellent chitinozoa rich sample. The black chitinous flasks are
clear to see in the images. Excellent stuff.
Rovar Liljas - Lower Visby Beds
Ostracod sample
Some encrustation but still nice and rich.
Ostracod Matrix Samples
The samples listed below are the richest we have from Gotland. Each has an abundant and
diverse fauna and they have been specially chosen for collectors who just one or two samples
from Gotland. A large collection of matrix is available further down this page for those wanting
much more comprehensive coverage.
Nyhamn Well (fine) - Lower Visby Beds - £5/$8
A super microsample that is rich in ostracods. This is one of the best we have from Gotland. Despite being from the Lower
Visby beds like the Irevik II sample listed below, it contains an ostracod fauna that has several notably different genera of
which most are ornate forms. Some we have not seen in any of our other samples. Excellent and very clean.
Irevik II (fine) - Lower Visby Beds - £5/$8
A very good sample featuring microbrachiopods, plentiful ostracods and some of the unusual torpedo-like bryozoans(?).
Some of the smallest ostracods have a distinct spine near the hingeline (below, any clue to an ID anyone?) whereas others
are reticulate. An interesting fauna. The Beyrichiids are very similar to the other Gotland beds but represent different
species and occasionally different genera.
Gustavsvik - Lower Visby Beds - £4/$6
A very good quality, ostracod rich sample.
Lau Backar #1 - Eke Beds (Type locality) - £5/$8
