These specimens are all rock samples collected at meteorite impact craters around the world. Many are from some
of the largest astroblemes (craters) and show lithologies typical of such structures, including melt breccias, injection
breccias, impact melts etc. There are a wide variety of types listed. In all specimens one side has been polished
while the other is left raw. Photographs generally show the polished side but random pieces show the raw side for
comparison. None of the specimens are coated or were sprayed with water prior to being photographed, so what you
see is what you get.

In all instances a penny is used for scale. The penny measures 20mm / 0.75 inches wide. All specimens are a nice
manageable size and almost all are slices. We have been careful to select examples that show the best lithology of
each type.

Specimens are listed in geological order, oldest to youngest from time of impact. Almost 2 billion years of impactites
are offered on these pages.

Reis Crater, Germany - Miocene 14.5 myrs
Like the Paasselka material from 200 million years earlier, the Reis impactite is also
superb looking material that bears a strong resemblance to lunar impact melt
breccias (right). Some of the best stuff around and very pretty. Comes from one if
the youngest known major impact craters.

The Reis Crater
Rochechouart, France - Triassic 201 myrs
This is one of out favourites. It is a very simple impact melt that has no inclusions but instead masses of gas vessicles
formed when the rock was melted and vapourised by the impact. Looks very similar to the honeycomb interior of a
Crunchie bar! Pretty stuff and a little more yellow in colour than the images suggest.

Janisjarvi Crater Lake, Finland
Rochechouart Shocked Quartz
These specimens represent fragments of shocked quartz rock from the crater. This material is not sliced as it is a
nightmare to work with - the hardness of the quartz and shock fractures mean it is extremely difficult to cut as the
material grabs the blades and can stall out even a diamond bladed saw. As such these hunks of the natural rock and
you can see the fractures in the texture.

Lake Lappajarvi, Finland - Late Cretaceous 73 myrs
A fine grained, dark impact melt breccia with small white clasts. This is a classic melt rock as it has very few internal
features due to the completely liquid nature of the melt when it cooled.

Lake Wanapitei, Canada - Eocene 37.2 myrs
Located to the north-east of the Sudbury Impact structure, material
from this crater is hard to obtain. Access is difficult and the fact that
the lake is full many of the rocks are obscured. The specimens listed
here were all cut from a single suevite pebble. Rare material.

Azura Shocked Pebble #1 - £5/$8
Covered in pits and compression fractures caused by
the impact shock wave passing through them and
bumping them into adjacent pebbles.
Azura Shocked Pebble #2 - £5/$8
Covered in pits and compression fractures caused by
the impact shock wave passing through them and
bumping them into adjacent pebbles.
