The specimens listed on this page all represent
part of the KT Boundary - the zone in the fossil
record that marks the end of the Cretaceous and
the beginning of the Palaeocene. (Technically the
name is now the KP boundary, but that reminds
us too much of the roasted peanut manufacturer
and we personally prefer the older KT label).

The KT boundary is famous for its higher Iridium
layers (as discovered by the Alvarez team) and is
synonymous with the Chicxulub impact crater in
Mexico.

Each sample is representative of a different part
of the world at a time when the dinosaurs were
becoming extinct. In some instances microtektites
or glass spherules have been found in the clay
matrix pieces.
Hell Creek Formation - South Dakota
Hell Creek Burn Layer - Vial £10/$15, capsule £3/$5
This sample is from a microsite and is rich in glassy globules representing the burn layer of the
KT boundary. Many of the globules are fractures and broken showing the glossy black interior
whereas others are still intact and preserve the distinct, globular shape typical of molten glass
that rained down over the burning landscape. Rare material.
Trochu - Alberta, Canada
Trochu KT matrix - £3/$5

A very good quality piece of black matrix
from the KT boundary in Alberta,
Canada. Shown in a 28mm/1 inch gem
jar for scale. From the uppermost
dinosaur beds.
Agost - Spain
Agost KT matrix - £3/$5

A very good quality piece of clay matrix
from the KT boundary in Spain. Shown
in a 28mm/1 inch gem jar for scale.
Microspherules/tektites have been found
in this material. If found they can be
easily teased out of the matrix with a pin
Stevens Klint - Denmark
Danish KT matrix - £3/$5
A very good quality piece(s) of friable matrix from the KT boundary in Denmark. Shown in a
28mm/1 inch gem jar for scale. Microspherules/tektites have been found in this material. If
found they can be easily teased out of the matrix with a pin. Interesting material from a
locality not immediately associated with the Cretaceous.

Boundary
Kieran Davis
Bidart - France
Bidart KT matrix - £3/$5

A very good quality piece of clay matrix from the
KT boundary in Spain. Each piece comes
housed in a gem jar and is of comparable size
to the other specimens on this page.
Microspherules/tektites have been found in this
material. If found they can be easily teased out
of the matrix with a pin
Gams Valley - Austria
Gams Valley KT matrix - £6/$10
A very good quality piece of clay
matrix from the KT boundary in
Austria. This is a rare sample that is
from a now protected site. This
material was collected decades ago
before the protective fencing was
put around the exposure.
Quigliotti - Italy
Quigliotti KT matrix - £6/$10
A very good quality piece of clay matrix from the KT boundary in Italy. This is a rare sample that
is from difficult to access exposure. The images above show the cliff face that needs to be dug
into to get to the very thin layer (you can see the ants in the image for scale!)/
