Silicified Ostracods
On this page are two rare microfossil samples of Mississippian silcified ostracods. These samples all required dissolving
limestone blocks in Hydrochloric acid to free the specimens. Silicified ostracod faunas are not well known but are often very well
preserved. They offer a different style of preservation to all the other microfossil samples that are listed on this site. Quantities
are extremely limited as they were purchased from a researcher who spent his life working with ostracods. The samples were
collected and processed in the 1960's and have not been worked on since then. The richness is practically unparalleled as the
hydrochloric acid processing dissolves everything that is not silicified. At times almost every grain seen under the microscope is
an ostracod. All sizes of ostracod shells are preserved allowing ontogenetic studies to be undertaken if so desired. Because of
the rarity of the material the sample size is obviously small, but the richness more than makes up for it. We have not counted but
it is likely there are several hundred fossils in every sample. If you have bought other ostracod samples from us in the past then
you will love this new, rare material. All material was legally collected by researchers and has only become available as it was
traded with other universities and museums that have since deaccessioned it from their collections.
Prepared Microfossil slides
For those wanting prepared examples of this material we can now offer 60 cell micropalaeontology
slides with glass covers from both formations. There are hundreds of specimens per slide and they
are ideal for sorting and study. The slides are produced with a rapid loading technique and so the
fossils can have any orientation. However, there are hundreds more fossils per slide than when
compared to traditional prep techniques.
