All of the specimens listed on this page are sections of chert mounted on slides and ground thin enough that light may pass
through them. Using a microscope the details of the plants can then be seen and studied. The fauna includes plants, spores,
fungi, arthropods and more. This really is a unique and fascinating fauna. None of the specimens have cover slips in case
there is a need to further prepare the specimens in the future. Microscope slide cover slips are cheap and readily available on
eBay for those who want to cover their specimens to protect them from damage.

All photographs show the specimens illuminated with reflected light i.e. light shining on, not through the specimen. Although this
is not the standard way of viewing thin sections we are aware that most microscope owners do not have back lighting
capabilities. Therefore we have presented the slides in the manner they will appear when viewed with even the most basic
microscope. As the images show,
all of the fine details, right down to the cellular level are still clearly visible and searches for
hidden treasures within the chert are perfectly possible. Backlighting the slides will offer a different perspective on the
preservation, but it is far from essential. From our experience studies can be done without backlighting that achieve 99% of
the results obtained from those done with transmitted light. Take a look at all the images and you can see the vast amount of
detail preserved and visible.

Species that we have found in slides like these include
Aglaophyton major, Horneophyton ligneri, Nothia aphylla,
Palaeomyces gordoni, Palaeomyces asteroxyli, Glomites rhynienses, Crussolum, Lepidocaris
and more. Plants, fungal
hypha, spores, cysts and arthropods have all been found. Visit our
informational page on the Rhynie Chert to get a better
understanding of the fauna and what may be hiding in the slides.

All of the thin sections listed below contain
Aglaophyton major axes and/or rhizomes. There are often abundant spores and
fungal cysts in each section. A few of the interesting inclusions are highlighted, but every slide is different and you never know
what is hiding.
All thin sections come with colour photographs of the inclusions.

Contains an unusually
large piece of
Aglaophyton axis.

Excellent cell detail
from a branching
section of the plant.
Excellent Aglaophyton
axis showing a shock
vein right through the
centre. Probably caused
by volcanic activity
associated with the
Rhynie hot springs.

The axis shows great
detail with clear cells
right into the centre. A
great thin section.
