Earth's Oldest Rocks

The Acasta Gneiss

The Acasta Gneiss of the Canadian North West Territories is the oldest preserved crustal rock in the world, dating back 4 billion years. The locality where these rocks are located is extremely remote and is only accessible by sea plane. As such this material will never be cheap to acquire, but is an important part of the ancient history of earth.

  • Acasta Gneiss rock dust necklace

    • The glass vial with chain contains dust produced when Acasta Gneiss specimens are cut.
    • Practically 100% pure as the dust is gathered in clean water during each prep session and then dried before being put into the vials.
    • An inexpensive way to get some truely ancient material.

  • Lewisian Gneiss

Lewisian Gneiss collection of 2 samples

    • The Lewisian Gneiss is the oldest rock in Europe, dating back 3 billion years.
    • These specimens were collected from north west Scotland and two distinct lithologies are available - a dark pink grantitic type and a white, often banded, form.
    • Each is housed in a 3cm gem jar
